African Lion Safari is a zoo, conservatory and theme park outside Hamilton Ontario, where the people are 'caged" (in their cars) and the animals roam freely. In addition to the drive-through "safari" there are bird and elephant shows, a train, boat ride, petting zoo, picnic areas and a small water-park for the kids.
Llamas, lions, tigers, deer, zebra, rhinos, giraffes and baboons roam freely around the fenced section of the park. When we first visited, two BC visitors we brought out greatly enjoyed the baboons who put on quite a show for us (let's just say the baboon population at the Safari must have grown dramatically the following Spring). They had all kinds of fun climbing all over our car and leaving some unwelcome souvenirs! A word to the wise - this is not the trip to make if you are squeamish or just had your Lexus detailed. You should also make sure to have a full tank of gas before you enter the park in the summer. It's extremely popular and it can take an hour or two just to drive through and see everything.
The Birds of Prey Conservation Centre at African Lion Safari houses hundreds of different birds. There are two bird shows - one featuring tropical birds, a somewhat over-choreographed display that is clearly a kiddie-pleaser. The second show features birds of prey, falcons and eagles, swooping down to chase prey. Both are educational and enjoyable, but the prey bird show gives you a truly rare opportunity to get up close and personal with falcons, owls and bald eagles. Once the bird shows are over there is an elephant show and petting zoo to visit, and during the hot summer peak season there is a water-park play area for the kids as well.
Like so many other small theme parks, African Lion Safari does food poorly (most of it is outsourced to Pizza-Pizza and the like). You might want to bring a picnic lunch or stop off at the Texas Grill on Highway 6 which is the closest main highway to the park. We stopped off and had a lovely lunch there on our way home.
